Bellini's Feast of the Gods

Published in Brown, David Alan. Giovanni Bellini: The Last Works. Milan: Skira, 2019

In collaboration with NGA staff (David Alan Brown, John Delaney, Kathryn Dooley, and Barbara Berrie), I created the digital simulation at left to show how Feast of the Gods may have appeared before Dosso Dossi and Titian reworked the composition after Bellini's death.

The National Gallery's (NGA) technical imaging of the painting showed Bellini painted a forest rather than the mountainous backdrop seen today. Color choices were informed by XRF, cross sections, and conversations with aforementioned experts. Still, despite the significant amount of data available to me, this simulation is highly subjective and meant only to serve as a translation of scientific information to visual imagery. Although the composition and colors were well informed, I took artistic liberties in many aspects of the image including the texture of the leaves, the rendering of tree trunks, and the placement of some branches.
