Conservation Live! (Anselm Kiefer, Das Geviert)

Detroit Institute of Arts, Thursdays and Fridays from December 19, 2019 - January 10, 2020

The DIA's modern and contemporary wing was deinstalled in early 2020.

Das Geviert by Anselm Kiefer required intervention before the Collections Management team could safely handle it. Occasionally joined by my colleagues, I performed preventive treatment in front of the public while entertaining their questions and comments. The program took place on Thursdays and Fridays (10am - 3pm), for one month.

Several times per day, I gave 5-minute talks in which I described the definition and purpose of art conservation, the painting’s current condition, and my treatment. I gave 16 talks over the course of four weeks, and was interviewed by Click on Detroit WDIV Local 4 and The Detroit News. The story was subsequently picked up by the Associated Press and released by numerous news outlets, including U.S. News and World Report.

Digital text panels regarding a conservator’s training, materials, and processes, was shown on loop on a screen mounted adjacent to the painting.
